Mexico legend Luis Hernandez is enjoying the festive atmosphere at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.
Football’s showpiece event has provided plenty of excitement so far – plus a host of surprising results.
Fans from across the globe are enjoying the matches, along with the vast array of entertainment and cultural events taking place across the country.
Hernandez, who appeared in two editions of the tournament and famously scored four goals at France ’98, expects the excitement to build over the coming weeks.
Your thoughts on the atmosphere at Qatar 2022?
So far, the atmosphere has been very good. In fact, I think it has been marvellous, both at the stadiums and around the country. We are seeing the best that Qatar has to offer.
How important is this tournament for the Middle East and Arab world?
It’s very important for Qatar’s profile and development as this is the first time an Arab country is hosting the World Cup. I hope by the end of the tournament, we will be able to tell a positive story about Qatar and the region to everyone living around the world.
What activations and events have you visited so far?
I’ve been to some events since arriving and I’m looking forward to engaging with many more during my time here. The atmosphere everywhere is very festive. Everyone is so excited. I’ve also taken part in other events during my time as an ambassador, including working with children to boost football and sport. It’s important to increase sporting participation among young people.
What do you think of Mexico’s chances at this World Cup?
There is always a possibility for Mexico to win the World Cup, and it would be great if the team was able to win the title, but I think it will be very challenging this time. It would be good to reach the latter stages – like we did previously when we made it to the quarter-finals.
Other than keeping a close eye on Mexico, which other teams are you looking forward to seeing at this World Cup?
I’m interested in seeing how Brazil and France play in this tournament, as well as England, who played well in their opening match against Iran. I think these teams have a lot of potential to go far in this competition.
